1.  Grilled cheese sandwiches with salsa.  Oh.  My.  God.  How have I forgotten how perfect a lunch this is?  How will I survive these next few days without access to a kitchen at lunchtime.  GrilledCHEESESALSA. Um yeah.  Also pretty grateful that the food cravings are making their presences known.  I’m usually an equal-op. food lover, so being consumed (pardon the pun) by thoughts of one – and only one – food?  I’m totally pregnant.

2.  We’re off to Massachusetts & New Hampshire & Vermont/Maine/Canada!  Woohoo!  Road trip!  Friends!  Family!  Adventures in unplowed country roads & a puny little Toyota with no snow tires!  Wahhooooooooo!!!!

3.  For Christmas, my mother-in-law surprised me with a candleholder that I had admired in a store we were in together.  I’l have to be more careful admiring things around her, because she can be generous to a fault, but I love love love this candleholder, and it makes me smile every time I look at it on my table – both the beauty of the thing itself, and how pleased she and my SsIL were to surprise me with it.

4.  Kate over at Waiting for Sunflower posted this astonishingly beautiful poem yesterday, and I’ve read it several times since then, and will have to copy it out for myself to keep forever, I think.  Read it here.

5.  Kate McGarrigle – one of my favorite singers – died yesterday.  Obviously not grateful for her passing, but grateful for what she did in this world.  Her songs are beautiful and heartfelt and if you’re not familiar with her voice or her songs or her family, here’s a YouTube video of her – and a few others – performing Hard Times Come Again No More, a song I keep returning to, no matter that it makes me cry every time I hear it.  Rest well, Ms McGarrigle.  You will be sadly missed.

I made your list! It means so much to me that my poem meant something to you. thank you.

  • RIP Ms. McGarrigle. Thank goodness for recordings. The harmonies she made with her sister were glorious.

Susan- on your way through MA, you might want to check out WUMB 91.9FM. If you enjoy the McGarrigles, you would probably like the music on that station (my fave since I “discovered” it in 1996). Somehow, I managed to buy a house and find a job that are both in a WUMB dead zone. Luckily, the station is online too, else I’d lose my mind at work every day.

  • Think of me when you pass through the now “red” state of MA! If Boston calls out your name, let me know and perhaps we can meet! :)

  • Have a great time on your trip! Also – I have eaten about 150 grilled cheese sandwiches during my pregnancy – so amazing. What cheese do you use? I am a sucker for land o lakes yellow american from the deli on italian bread…
