Afternoon OB Appointment and All is Well

First off:  All is well.  Afternoon appointment, so I just got home.

SuperStarOB is great.  I really like him and his assistant and his receptionist.  I think we’re going to do just fine together.  He’s funny and compassionate and kind and while I was waiting for him, a previous patient came in and it was kisses and hugs all around.  His past patients really like him, which is a great recommendation in & of itself.  He used to work with my RE, which is how they know each other, and he actually reminds me of him a great deal.  He spent about an hour talking to me – while other folks were waiting (sorry, other folks!) because he wanted to be sure he understood everything we would be dealing with.

He’s not worried about the spotting.  Since it’s mucosy, and not just blood, he seems to think that’s a good thing (?)  He told me not to worry about exercising, but not to do more than walk.
“Walk as much as you want, but no hanggliding.  No parachuting.  No deepsea diving.”  Um, ok.   Told me not to worry about being a few pounds overweight, “You’re lighter than an awful lot of my patients, and that is the least of our worries at this point.”  Ok.  I can live with that.

Sonogram was fine – hearts beating away at 190bpm, one measuring 9w5d & one measuring 9w1d.  He told me to stay on the meds that my doc has me on, and that he might keep me on Lovenox throughout the pregnancy just because it can’t hurt and might help.  He went out of his way to tell me to relax.  ”You want a glass of wine on a special night?  Drink the wine!  You want a cup of coffee to get rid of a headache?  Drink the coffee.  As you know, nothing you’re doing will or won’t save a pregnancy that’s going to fail.”  I found his attitude rather refreshing, though I can’t imagine downing a glass of wine.

Asked him about my due date (Yom Kippur) since he’s a solo practitioner – would this be a problem?  ”Nah, they call me the Shabbos doctor at Beth Israel.  If you’re there, I’ll be there.”  I asked him about renting a doppler, and he said he hates them, that they’re tricky to use, and cause unnecessary worry.  I tried to explain to him that I am pretty convinced on a daily basis that the pregnancy has failed, and so he said, “I was going to have you come back in 2 weeks – would you rather come back next week?  I’m not trying to make extra money off you, but we could do an ultrasound every week til you’re feeling movement, if you like.”

Um, yes please!

I like this man.  I like him very very much indeed.  And, as I had hoped, he has an ultrasound machine and he likes to use it.  I think we’re going to get along just fine.

  • Praise the gods.
    And
I am so glad this went well today in every way. I wanted so badly for this guy to be magical for you, and so far so good. Next week! Whoo hoo!
    A man who gets it.

No deep sea diving. Well, ok. I guess…

    XOXOOX
big hugs to you and a big exhalation.
    phew!

  • Ohhhh…so glad you found someone so wonderful. Finding an OB you get along with is such a blessing (and weekly ultrasounds to boot!). So happy for you….

  • So glad to hear the update!

  • Oh, hurray for reassurance and a doctor who’s willing to use that machine!

First of all, congratulations on a good ultrasound and making it successfully past your most difficult week!

An ultrasound every week until you feel movement? Seriously? I think *I’m* in love!!!

    Congrats!! :)

  • Wonderful news-a doc who GETS you. Yipppee for weekly ultrasounds!!!!!

By the way, I did lots of walking and some prenatal yoga AFTER my first trimester bleeding finally stopped…but you don’t need to be a superstar-you will lose the baby weight AFTER you have that beautiful baby in your arms…enjoy some guilt-free eating for a while. I waffled between obsessing about my weight to not giving a damn. I recommend shooting for something right in the middle.

    warmly,
    Mags

Ohhh myyyyy gossshhh! An u/s every week? How cool is that!

    He sounds fantastic! :)

I found the home doppler hard to use, especially with twins, until about 14 weeks. But if you do get one, make sure it’s the digital kind.

  • I am relieved and thrilled for you. As a weekly ultra sounder (my word!) myself, I fully support you in taking him up on that offer and you will not be disappointed in the relief.

  • He sounds great. Great attitude to alcohol and coffee as well – one glass or two isn’t going to make the difference; ditto a cup of coffee a day.

  • Oh, wow! I’m in love with your OB! Weekly ultrasounds!!!! That’s just divine! This is just the doc you need (and I might have to relocate to NY for the next few weeks until I can feel movement!)

I can tell you though I am loving the doppler now. And since my OB isn’t as in love with her u/s machine as yours, the doppler has been my lifeline. Seriously!

Oh, yay! I’m so excited that this is going to be a good fit, Susan!!

  • Oh Susan now i can breathe! I have been holding my breath all day for you. And he sounds awesome. So very happy for you!

Wow what a great doctor. What a great human being. I am so pleased you have found someone that takes all the IF worries seriously.
And WHOOOHOOOOOOOOO!!! everything is good with the mini-sprog’s.

    Oh happy day

  • Yea! I’ve been waiting for this update all day. Go, sprogs, go! And seriously, this man seems to be the perfect fit! I wish I would have asked to come in every week for an u/s until there was movement. I know it would have given me much more peace of mind! Congrats for all the great news Susan!

  • Thats all well and good, but what about Brooke Sheilds! JK!
    Wonderful news!

    Susan Reply:

Heheheh. I didn’t have the heart to grill him about her. Though he seems like he’s going to be a “teasable” kind of doctor, so maybe I’ll get the scoop someday!

  • Oh, I’m so glad you liked him. And even more glad that things look good. Weekly ultrasounds? Wow…I thought I had a lot (5.5 weeks, 6.5, 8, 10, 12, and then monthly). What did you think about the Lovenox plan? I remember you weren’t too keen on it in the first place…

    Susan Reply:

Quite honestly, I’d stand on my head for the next 7 months if there was a chance it would help matters any. Lovenox isn’t fun, but it’s not even close to being a big deal. PIO is actually more of a pain in the ass (sorry for that bad pun!) I’ll happily Bruise my Belly for the cause if he thinks it might possibly, maybe make a difference. Works for me.

Whew! While the page loads I just sit here saying please, please, please over and over in my head. Then to see that all is well – well, just whew! The doc sounds great! Getting to see your baby/ies so often will be so reassuring! You’ll have quite the album of u/s pics. Hopefully that pesky spotting will end soon. Even if he’s not worried, and thank goodness for that, it’s still nerve racking.

  • KK

Fabulous! I am so glad you found a great match.
Did you explain to him that the window of happiness is 37 hours, so every-other-day u/s would really be ideal?

  • Susan, this doctor sounds awesome. Go each week, I think that is a wonderful idea. I agree with the doctor. When I had my children 30 years ago it was okay to drink socially or every once in awhile. My children were big and healthy. My sisters kids were big and healthy and she smoked. If a pregnancy is going to fail those things will not change it. I am so happy that all is well. When I read your posts about the bleeding I get so worried. I am praying that you have perfection and will have a baby in your arms, full term.

  • OMG! He is a gift from the Gods! I can’t believe he is willing to give you weekly relief, what a great guy for even thinking of it! SHOULD I be so lucky as to need an OB, I may have to fly to NY every week to partake of his awsomeness.

    Congratulations!

  • He sounds like a perfect match. I don’t know if Id need an ulrasound every week, but deinitely until the heartbeats could be reliably picked up by the doppler. Whatever makes you feel at ease.

  • I am sure this is a much too personal question, so feel free to choose not to answer it: Are you still going to abort one of the babies & move to a singleton pregnancy? If so, at what point will you do this? If not, what made you change your mind?

    Susan Reply:

If I feel like chatting about this anytime soon, I’ll post. Don’t hold your breath. You’re right – it kind of is way too personal a question to ask casually in comments.

  • I love when you find a doctor you can work with. That means a lot when one is anxious and worried.

I also love that the babies’ hearts are beating away. That’s awesome.

  • Great news. I love my own doc, who is magnificent. And I am very happy that you got a doc that understands and treats you right.
Now you can breath a bit. Go have something to eat. You know you want to. And you surely deserve it. :-) )

  • I’m so glad you have an awesome doctor! It’s a relief to hear he thinks the spotting isn’t anything to worry about. And the promise of weekly ultrasounds is making me want to relocate. :)

  • Pie

Yay for a good OB! So glad it went well, and he loves his u/s machine!

  • Sounds like a fantastic appointment and a wonderful doctor. Wins all around!

  • Glad things went well!!! And he sounds great.

  • I am out of this world excited that you found a stellar and sensitive OB. I want all of my bloggidy sisters to have excellent caregivers and it makes me crazy angry to hear some of the awful treatment out there. So glad you and the little babes are doing well and that you can get weekly assurances until your heart is calm. Sorry about not being able to hangglide though. ;-)
