Wow! Hello! I’m Back!

Yesterday was sucky.

Not because of sleep issues – actually, the little guy slept beautifully the night before (and last night, too – yay!)

But because I was sick.  With the flu.  (I got a flu shot – why, again?)  Or at least the pseudo-flu.  Maybe I ingested a bit of his rotavirus vaccine?  It’s an oral dose, and he was refusing to swallow it, so it was all over him.  Maybe I kissed him too much while he was still wearing so much of it.  I don’t know.  But yesterday was fever-city over here – full on body-aches and lightheaded excitement (“Come quick because I think I’m going to drop the baby!”) At least I wasn’t puking or pooping.  Still, the fever was bad enough.

But then, (because why stop with one physical misery?) my foot – the one that went all wonky during pregnancy – went all wonky again.  Like ‘couldn’t put any weight on it’ level of wonkiness.

That sucked.

And then, by evening-time, when the flu symptoms were abating, I felt like my upper lip was a bit numb.  Yeah.  By 10:30 when I went to bed, I was sporting the biggest hive I’ve ever had or seen.  So big that it’s STILL evident, more than 12 hours later. And it’s been joined by one on my wrist and both ankles.  Fun times.

The good news is that I haven’t run a fever yet this morning.

And my foot is better.  Not “I’m going dancing tonight” better, but I can walk.  I can carry the baby up & down stairs.  I don’t have to try to imagine navigating the next 2 months in a walking boot.

The hive on my upper lip is better, but nowhere near gone (and it swelled up so much that the inside of my upper lip is all raw from being, you know, stretched too tight.  Yuck.)  I’ll be staying within doors til this sucker goes away, as it looks like nothing so much as a fat lip from being punched.

But in general, the world is a much friendlier place than it was 24 hours ago.  Which is good because yesterday?  Yesterday I was feeling a bit persecuted.  Like physical misery was my payback for having been so thrilled that Henry was sleeping through the night again.

Though, even given yesterday’s craptitude?  It’d still be worth it. I really like to sleep.  I’d forgotten how much.  Not just the wonderful way you feel when it’s time to wake up & that’s okay, but just how very lovely it is to cuddle into bed & know you don’t have to get out of it for at least a few more hours.

Oh, and in other news, his pediatrician appointment went great.  He’s now 19#14oz, and stands 27.5″ tall.  Perfectly proportioned.  (For an 8-month-old.)  His pedi is pleased with his development – loved the fact that he was all smiles with her up til the point where he got his shots.  She was impressed with how long he stands.  (Well, I say ‘stands’ but it’s more like ‘holds himself totally rigid and balances upright with a little help’)  He does want to roll from back to front but he’s still struggling to figure out what to do with his arm.  It gets in his way every time and so he’s spending lots of time on his side.  Naps are becoming less of a struggle, and the evening sleeping thing has gotten easier since I’ve started feeding him before I go to sleep.  Probably helps that I’m going to sleep earlier, too…

Oh, and the best news?  The weird biting thing from yesterday seems to have stopped.  Determined that he was really only doing it while lying in bed, so I eliminated the ‘come to bed with us at 4am and eat til you sleep routine, and it’s been fine.  Whew.

Now if I can just get through the day without developing any new, weird ailments I’ll be pleased…

  • Wow- I’m sorry to hear ou were so under the weather :( Glad you are better now despite the hive.

And- congrats on his appointment- and for weighing 1.5 pounds more than my nearly nine month old, lol!

  • Big boy- he’s only slightly smaller than Maya… who is double his age!

So sorry to hear you were sick. we had the illness around here too and I was glad to see it go!

  • That is a lot to endure for a day, mama! I am glad you’ve rejoined the land of the living and that it seems like symptoms (on all fronts) are abating.

It is the times when I have been very sick (and that’s happened 3 times in the last year, more than in the prior decade or more combined) that I worry about how I will manage with two children. But, women have done it for eons so I will have to buck up (and make sure I have an arsenal of helpers to call upon).

Continue to feel better and kisses to your big boy!

  • susan, that’s not influenza. flu lasts days and days and days. it’s some sort of flu-like virus, but i’m worried about the swelling and hives. benadryl/claritin will help with swelling, as will motrin, but i think you should call your doctor b/c these viruses can trigger all kinds of wackiness and other delayed symptoms.

Yes, I am also sorry you had to endure such physical discomfort and challenges yesterday – that’s a lot! It’s kind of a mystery, I’ve never heard of that combo of symptoms with the flu. . .sounds a bit like an allergic reaction perhaps? Anyway, sending healing thoughts and glad sounds like the worst has passed. Yay Henry on the great report!

so glad you seem to be on the mend. that’s one odd collection of symptoms. I agree might be worth a mention to your doctor just to make sure it’s not a constellation of something or other that needs attending to. hope your lip comes back down to size soon. and yay! henry! for being so big and strong!
